3 things modern law firm owners don’t want competitors to know

Written by Tom Stansfield on 8th March 2021

Let's jump straight in. Number one - They optimise their systems. It can sometimes seek like a balancing act remaining compliant and trying to minimise man hours spent on cases but optimising systems is the first key to success. Successful business owners aren’t afraid to take risks and bringing in new systems can often seem risky but calculated decisions will mean you have a balance of risk and reward and it is recognised that optimising your use of tech will make your business more efficient.

The second thing that law firm owners don’t want competitors to know is that you don’t have to own the IP. There are so many large law firms who are investing huge sums of money in customised I.T systems and don’t recognise that an off the shelf package is often more cost effective and quicker to implement. The term ‘don’t reinvent the wheel’ springs to mind.

One thing we know for sure is that developers are happy to take your money. They are in business themselves so they will price your project accordingly. Especially when they know they are dealing with a law firm because there is a perception that law firms have deeper pockets. They don’t necessarily realise that law firms have increased insurance premiums, or that their client acquisition costs aren’t lower than unregulated providers. Then there is the ongoing costs associated with the upkeep of a system. Why bear this cost if you don’t have to.

With this in mind, it’s fair to ask what makes WillSuite or LoveLegal any more trustworthy than these other developers?

Firstly, we understand the market. This places us in a great position to be able to serve our clients (growing law firms and estate planning businesses). Secondly, we’re disruptive. This is a real positive for the progressive law firm owner. We have built a system that we want law firms to implement and we’re proud of it. The tools we have built have been done so with customisation in mind and much of the customisation can be done without the need for developers so law firms have more control over their systems AND over their budget. The benefit for WillSuite is that people shout about the flexibility of our system and we don’t spend huge amounts of money on marketing. Also, the more firms using our system, the more suggestions and feedback we get for new features so it will only get better.

The last thing that modern law firm owners don’t want you to know is that they are watching others build barriers to business and they spend their time listening, understanding and implementing. I recently read an article about a solicitor who built and sold a multi-million pound business using efficient fixed cost practices. Tech played a part as did a control on costs but all the time he was surrounded by competitors who he perceived to lack transparency and didn’t inspire trust and consumer confidence.

These are three easy wins.
